Considering Getting A Laptop

Apple fags,

I'm looking for a medium-end system that's good for computational/design performance, not gaming. I'm looking for 768MB+ of RAM. It's best if you can find 512MB so I can find a cheap upgrade on my own from 3rd party. I only need a 40GB HD, but it must be 5400RPM or faster. The screen size should be 17"+ preferably. The processor doesn't have to be great at all, I don't care if it's AMD or Intel, but I don't want some POS celeron or equivilent, I need that L1/2 cache.

What I will be doing on this computer:

Programming - C++/HTML/PHP/etc..
DB - MySQL
Design - Photoshop/Dreamweaver
Optical Media - DVD-ROM and CD-RW

I will be doing design for some people on the move, I will be doing networking with some companies and I also want to be able to program and run HL2 in low settings for modding.

I'm only considering buying if the price/deal is right. My price is around $800. I've looked at some places, but I want to see what you guys may be able to cook up. Thanks!

I'm only familiar with Dell, but I got my e1705 with a 1.6 duo core 100gb 7200rpm 7900gs for about $1300 before tax. Bought some memory off of Newegg cause dell's is so fucking expensive. If you wait around Dell usually has either 30% off or $750 off all inspirons over $2000 so it's a good deal.

Aren't you a Dell vendor or something? Why not just buy one from them? And if you're not, get me a quote.(build the comp on dell and link me to it), also goto the spec page of the comp and get all the ID's for every part. I may be able to get it discounted for you.

I get dogshit of a discount, -3%. Which is better than nothing of course, but it's not even something to consider. I'm going to have to wait for their newsletter thing I guess and find a decent deal. But I'm also looking at some other companies. Who ever has the best deal gets my moola.

its hard to find a decent 17" laptop in that range, if you get a decent CPU (ie not celeron or sempron) then you take a hit somewhere else, most likely in video.

id check out Averatec, they have a few turion based 17" laptops with radeon xpress 200 chipsets for around 900-1000. since you want it mainly for coding id recommend AMD, they always win the compiling benches.

I know he doesn't want one. He's just always bashing Apple. Also, you don't have to pay $3000 for an Apple laptop. MacBooks cost around $1000 with a student discount.
