obviously, my problem is with the mandate that all high school students must do 50 hours of community service a year. i can raise my children just fine and they will do community service when they or my wife or i feel its necesarry or needed.

once something is mandated, its never done beyond regulation.

i think it's a great idea. mainly because my school district required community service for all students from the 5th grade on through high school. my 8th grade english class took a few days off to plant flowers shrubs and trees at a retirement home, and there was always a big earth day project. we even planned out a rain garden to put in a local park at the end of the year. same shit in high school, except it was an actual play park with slides and a jungle gym etc. it's a great way to get kids involved in community improvement, which could theoretically combat rural and urban decay.

edit: and hell, we didn't even get paid for the shit we did. now there's fucking cash incentive to boot.

In all serious how can this be wrong? You help your community, it keeps kids busy, hell it might knock down crime abit, and they get money towards an education which once again helps them out. Sure it has a heavy socialism flavour to that but really, get used to it. It's here, cry about it. In the past we were nations who helped build ourselves. This will continue that and knock ourselves out of our 'someone else will do it' mentality or the already shown 'ill do it when i want to' thinking which means that nothing gets done. Knock knock, its change.

but seriously in some countries in europe national service is compulsory once you reach a certain age and hes not even asking that, all he seems to want is kids to help out around the community and what the hell is wrong with that? really im struggling to grasp what feeds issue is here
